What we didn't know is that Milan also has a pretty epic gay scene — the largest and best in all of Italy and one of our favorite gay friendly cities in Europe.

Hop off at the Puerto Venezia metro stop, dolled up with rainbows, and head up to the streets around Lecco — gayness is everywhere! On weekends these streets come alive as the LGBTQ community comes together and creates a fabulous street party. That's why we love it. Few gay scenes we've experienced have such a vibe outside of Pride.

This is one place in the world that you didn't think you'd fall in love with so much.

So gay that they have a whole metro stop Porta Venezia devoted to gay — dolled up with rainbows everywhere as you get off.

This is one very open-minded city — a complete contrast to the rest of Italy which is more conservative and not as tolerant when it comes to LGBTQ rights. We had no issues checking into hotels as a gay couple and asking for a double bed. We felt totally comfortable walking the streets holding hands in the city.

Gayness is so embedded in the day-to-day psyche that Italians from all gay the country head here seeking a haven to express themselves. Small bars line these streets. Every weekend the crowds spill out to the pavements outside transforming the area into one big club fiesta.
